Most miniature huskies who are afraid of stairs develop the
fear because they are not exposed to stairs early on. If you live in a
single-story home, your puppy might not see stairs until they are older. You
might even put up a baby gate to prevent injuries.
If you want to help your dog navigate the steps
successfully, here are a few simple things you can do:
Clear Off the Steps
Don’t leave items on the steps that could cause your puppy
to trip or tumble down the steps. A startled puppy could easily decide the
steps are not safe.
Show Your Puppy How to Navigate the Steps
Show your puppy how you go up and down the steps. If you
have another pet that can navigate the steps well, let the puppy observe that
pet going up and down the steps. Praise all attempts at going up and down the
stairs.
Take it One Step at a Time
Use treats to coax an unwilling pup. Take a break if your
puppy hesitates or becomes interested in another activity.
Try Another Way
Some pups learn going down the stairs best. Other pups like
going up the stairs. Let your puppy take the lead here.
The most important thing to remember is to take it slowly.
Allow your puppy to acclimate to the task.
